There's a slurpee in the road!

A day of upper 40s did a great job of melting most of the ice from the roads, and around 30 runners seized the moment and ran a few miles in the neighborhoods in Brookside This Thursday evening.Michael, Stefanie, and Jana await the announcements before the run.

There was not much to announce since it has been pretty tough getting our runs in due to old man winter. But these two ladies were out to conquer on Tuesday in the worst of the arctic surge.Amanda and Melanie ran 3 miles Tuesday at the river while the rest of us warmed ourselves by the fire. Seems to me that is they can run in 6 degree wind chill, and in a snowstorm, they should be able to do ANYTHING!

I thought Tatur Dave might have gotten a sports injury, or maybe had been in a fight for a noble cause. What WAS that mark on his forehead??? Turns out, he stabbed himself with his fingernail while shampooing his hair! Ya just can't make up stuff like that.

Someone named Glen from Norman, Okla
requested more pictures of April. Never one to pass the opportunity to photograph a runner babe, I am happy to oblige. April and her friend Ashley are all smiles before our run!!

It was a wet slushy slurpee run, and a little slippery towards the end. Still, everyone made in back unscathed.

Some sights along the way....Never can tell where Bobby might show up!!!

The color is red, and red is FAST!

Seems like I heard a not too long ago that this particular arrangement of star/moon would not be visible for 80 some-odd years. I don't feel 80 years older???

Have a great weekend everyone, and we'll see ya Saturday. Warmer weather guaranteed!

Holiday on Ice

A few runners wanted to sneak a run in in lieu of the missed run on Tuesday, so about 5 of us slipped down to 21st and Riverside for a little ice running.Sandra and Debra were there early, as was T Z. Debra took off and got her miles out of the way before the sun went down.It was a prefect night to photograph a sunset. Notice the mini-icebergs in the river. And then notice the ducks swimming. BRRR!!!There were actually quite a few people on the river path tonight either walking or running, and some were taking pictures. These guys were shooting pics, and occasionally stepping out on the frozen river.Michael and Bobby organized this group run. We had a good workout, alternating between crunchy snow, slick ice, and sloppy slush. We ended up cutting the normal 4.4 miles to 3 miles after a 1/4 mile of slush on the 11th Street bridge took the wind out of our sails. Still, it was a much better workout that sitting on the couch. Beats the treadmill too.

Holy snotsicles, Batman!

Just when you thought it could not get any colder, winter shows us how stupid that thought is. Saturday morning, it was F..F..F..FREEZING!!
60-70 C..C..CRAZY runners sh..sh..shivered and huddled together for warmth on a day that only a penguin could love. Here's a clue, people. Act like you love each other and share your body warmth!! The small brick building provided just a little break from the wind.

Not sure what yarn Larry was spinning, but he had a captive audience!

Coach Kathy rolled in just after freeing her tongue which was stuck to a steel fence post. A good winter tip....never accept a dare to lick a frozen metal surface when it's below 25 degrees! **************************************************************

Hats and gloves were the preferred attire of the day. My Momma always told me if I kept my head and hands warm that I would not lose my body heat...or something like that.

Apparently, that is what Janeen was told as well.

BRRRR!! I am sure she FROZE her legs though!!! *************************************************************

Whereas Janeen was wearing shorts, Lisa was wearing undershorts. Not sure of exactly how these were supposed to work. I would have guesses maybe another way?....Maybe this was how they were supposed to work!

Finally, after a few minutes of chattering teeth, we were off and running. We ran south, out 4 miles from the Helmerich Park at 73rd and Riverside to Jenks, and then east on the Creek Turnpike trail. A return trip was frigid, running right into the throat of a stiff north wind.

Katy kicks it up a notch on the way back. The sooner she gets back, the sooner Starbucks will have her coffee order!

Just 2 miles from the finish, Sandra is frozen solid in mid-stride. It took 3 cups of hot chocolate to thaw her out!

Always one to break a good sweat, Bobby outdoes himself with a nice outcropping of "sweatsicles!"

After the run, several of our group found their way out of the cold and over to First Watch for a healthy breakfast. 800-1000 calories burned, 1200-1500 calories taken in. Isn't it great to be a runner??

Runners bring back bling! :-) We lose Lauren to that state to the east! :-(

Tuesday marked the return of our running guru Kathy. Fresh off qualifying for the Boston marathon, and being ranked for having the 47th best time in a 100 mile race (and T Z is very im- pressed), Kathy reeled off a last place finish in Bermuda, but no doubt won the award for having the most fun along the way. Kathy and Roman completed the Bermuda Challenge, a one mile dash, a 10K, and a 26.2 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively. This netted a considerable haul of hardware!Roman seemed no more the worse for his endeavors. Seems like he can always pull a finish out of his....uhh....pocket. Well, he did sport this "injury", but hey, he could have got that anywhere. Looks like some barb wire action to me. Great job guys! Take me with you next time!

More congratulations were due to Stefanie, who ran the Houston Marathon on Sunday in 4:47:22. This makes 3 marathons in just slightly over 3 months which seems maniacal enough, but Stefanie will ice the cake in a few weeks in Ft Worth when she runs the Cowtown Marathon, and gets her Marathon Maniac status. Must say, cool metal, but that's the coolest ribbon I've ever seen.

The paparazzi thought he spotted a newbie. Janeen is an old-timer, but her friend Kate on the right looked like a new face to me. Either way, it was nice to meet you!

After the run, several of us went to Johnnies to a going away party for Lauren. Lauren has taken a job in Little Rock, which is great since now we all have a place to crash when we do all of the Arkansas races!!!

And on a completely unrelated note, Bobby got new glasses, and we all took turns trying them on. They were so strong, they weirded me out. Brian tried them on, and I thought he looked quite distinguished. Even looked a little like a celebrity...just cannpt quite figure out who.

While our faithful army of runners assembled at the store on Saturday morning, eagerly anticipating some slightly warmer weather for the scheduled 4, 9, or 10 miles........our beloved Coach Kathy was probably sipping her 2nd Mimosa and thinking about what was for breakfast........ while laying on the beach contemplating the scenic 10K run on tap for later that morning. It was part of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge, a one mile run on Friday, a 10K Saturday, and a marathon on Sunday.
But oh well, we'll give her H E Hockeystick Hockeystick when she gets back home! We had a task at hand: our scheduled long run.

In our continuing effort to be NE Oklahoma's most organized training group, runners found their group and run leaders with ease, thanks to the new signs. Pats on the back to the elves who made them. :-)

We love new runners, and RunnersWorld is the best place for new runners to get into shape for running whatever distance they desire.

Top left is Casey, and Tina to the right.

Next is Cecile and Jennifer.

To the left is Eric, and with the neon hat, is David.

Super excited to have you all out to train with us. Let Kathy, Brian, or one of the run leaders know if there is any way we can help you!

Out the door, and away we go!!The plan was to run through the neighborhood to the river path, and then south to 71st Street. At that point, those wanting some hills in their diet crossed the bridge to Turkey Mountain, while those who preferred a flatter terrain, stayed on the river path to the lovely red casino before turning around. Not sure what the totals were, but it seemed to me that most went for to Turkey. Some added the red loop....a little dirt is good for the sole. (yuk yuk) Some instead went down the paved path for a short out-and-back.Jennifer and Ed cruise after conquering the mile long incline across the bridge.

Jason, Kendal, and Michael take it to the house.

Suzanne and Kendal talk shop after the run.

I never ceased to be amazed at all the high-tech clothing available. Here, Larry models some running tights that are best on days that it's just barely cool enough to have the legs covered, but warm enough that you still want to show some skin. I offered to buy these tights for a healthy price, but he declined to sell.

Paula, Michael, Joe, and Greg toss around some training ideas and agendas after the run.

In the mean time, be sure to show Coach Kathy some sympathy as she'll be a little ouchy what with having run 3 races in 3 days, and sun-bathing for 4 days on the beaches of Bermuda!
