Wednesday at the Track

We started our track sessions Wednesday Night, meeting at Will Rogers High School on the padded track around the football field. I, for one, thought it was a super nice facility, with the rubberized surface being a soft glide. It was almost as nice as running on soft trails. The idea behind these track sessions is to fine tune particular aspects of your running. This is a time to systematically whittle your pace down. An easy jog around the track to warm up is followed by a brief series of stretching. Then, with your target pace in mind, you run a lap (400 meters or 1/4 mile) at the prescribed pace, then a slow jog or walk, and repeating this 4 times. I am sure there will be different workouts as we progress. It is important to stay focused on the task at hand, following the methods, and not running lap after lap as fast as your legs will carry you. If you do not run the designed intervals, then it's just another evening jog at the river--not a bad thing, but you're not likely to get the results that others who follow the directions get. There were some tonight who ran 6 laps, and some who probably ran 16 or more. It will be interesting to see how much everyone progresses. We may start to see a lot of PRs shattered in the next few months. A good thing, yes?

DAY-OHN-DAY 5K/10K Run & 1 Mile



The run will be Saturday May 26, 2012 8:00am at Mohawk Park. Pre-registration is going on now through May 25th for the DAY-OHN-DAY (which means "wonderful" in the Kiowa language) 5K/10K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run. Open to the public, with proceeds benefitting the 60th Tulsa Powwow July 27-29.

Bill Ford's "Will Run For Bagels" Training Run



Thanks to Bill and Sheila Ford, who hosted the first annual "Will Run For Bagels" training run in Stillwater on Saturday May 19th. Bill owns the Old School Bagel Cafe Stillwater, and provided the tasty bagels that helped energize the runners throughout the night (baked by Bill himself!). The trail was a 15-mile out and back on the outskirts of Stillwater. About 20 runners enjoyed cool weather from the thunderstorms flanking them but nobody got wet. Everyone had a good run starting 8pm with the last coming in at 4am:

  • A dozen or so of Stillwater's Old School Bagel Couch to 5k group went 3 miles

  • Simone Halstead: 10 miles

  • Sheila Ford says she "only" ran 11 miles

  • Arnold Begay, Candace Brown, Cassie Russell: 15 miles

  • Bill Ford, Ken Childress, Bill Richardson, Deann Deatheredge, Vicky Arterburn, Russell Bennett: 30 miles

  • Kathy Hoover: 33 miles

Warrior Princess Trail Run Preview

The Warrior Princess Foundation was founded by Michael and Chrissy Whitten after their precious daughter, Lilian Grace, earned her wings Thursday, August 5, 2010. She was born with T18, Edward’s Syndrome on Sunday, April 25, 2010, and fought a daily battle for 103 days. Her parents realized the need and desire to help other families going through this similar journey due to the large costs and grueling daily battles this syndrome creates on a daily basis. The race is in memory of Michael and Chrissy Whitten’s daughter, who was diagnosed with T18 sixteen days into her life.

Lilian Grace Whitten, Warrior Princess, soared above and beyond what was expected of her life. Her first breath was supposed to be her last. She lived 103 glorious days on this earth before earning her wings. God gave us the reason why she was here through the following scripture: “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through FAITH. And I pray that you being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the LOVE of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the FULLNESS OF GOD.” Ephesians 3:17-19


The Warrior Princess Trail Run proceeds will benefit babies diagnosed with T18 & T13 chromosomal disease and their families by providing assistance, support and resources as needed.

This years race is on a Wednesday night, April 25th at 6:00 PM. It's at the Keystone State Park on the east side of the highway. There will be lots of cars, and signs pointing the way. Some pictures of the course.

Luke Welvaert--Marathon Runner

One of our runners, Luke Welvaert, was the subject of a very nice story featured on Fox 23.



Luke, the youngest person to achieve Marathon Maniacs, has an awesome story. Luke started training for a marathon, and lost 40 lbs in the process. He is on a mission to run 12 marathons in 12 months, and will no doubt eclipse that goal and who knows what else. He has inspired several of his friends at school, some of their parents, and even some of his teachers to join his quest in marathon running. Very inspiring!!!

Congratulations to all the Little Rock Marathon runners from our gang. Many a PR was smashed in the neighboring state, and the bling-level was soaring in the store Monday evening! Christy, nailing a 4:18 in her marathon, sports this huge metal disc suitable for making a plate of nachos. Huge. Really HUGE.
Any medal for running a marathon is sweet. And you know--size isn't everything. But DANG it's sure cool. Someone said the medal was as big as a hubcap....
....I say it's BIGGER.

The coldest game on earth

Last Saturday the RW gang came out for the usual AM run dressed like they were on the way to a strip poker game. Layers layers, and more layers. and in fact, a poker game WAS on tap for the day--the bi-annual Poker Run. This is a fund raiser to fund all the snacks and Gatorade provided by RunnersWorld on our Saturday runs. The bad thing is, our string of warm days had expired, and Saturday was the coldest day of winter--so far!Roman knows how to stay warm. Heater on full blast, double gloves, hand and foot warmers, and an Amish space heater to boot! He looks warm and toasty.
Huge thanks to the volunteers who stood out and froze while getting people signed in, helping with awarding the winnings after the run, and also those on the course dealing cards.
Ray is working on assembling his poker team, and also keeping his nose warm.
